Janice L. Van Derbur-Certified Judge
Janice L. Van Derbur was born in Caracas, Venezuela and began formal piano study at the age of 3. She moved to Houston, Texas in junior high and began her studies with Lavonia Freeland and Ruth Burr. She attended Sam Houston State University, studying with Jay Meadors and Dr. John Paul. She furthered her studies at Tulane University with Minka Roustcheva and David Milliken, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree. From there she went on to Paris, France to study with Nicole Henriot-Schweitzed and Jacqueline Latarjet. While living in Paris, Janice played numerous solo and chamber music recitals and won 3 prizes in competitions at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, Belgium.
Returning to Houston in 1980, Janice maintained a private piano studio and served on the faculty of Lonestar North Harris College until her retirement in 2015. Since her retirement, she regularly performs as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician.
